HIGH POINT, N.C.-The Labor Day weekend is a key barometer for fourth-quarter sales, and furniture retailers are loading their best promotional ammunition in a bid to bring consumers through the door.

Many retailers map their fourth-quarter strategies based on sales figures gathered at the close of the three-day weekend. "For retail in general, in nine of the last 10 years, Labor Day is a predictor of retail sales at Christmas," said Britt Beemer, founder of America's Research Group.
