The Navy will experience an increasing shortage of aircraft beginning near the end of the century which may result in a deployed force able to meet only 60 percent of the service's naval fighter and attack aircraft long-term requirements, and only a reduction in commitments or an increase in funding will avert this situation, Robert F. Hale, assistant director, National Security Division, Congressional Budget Office (CBO), told Senators yesterday.
Hale forwarded to the Senate Appropriations Defense Subcommittee CBO's vision of a future carrier flight deck force that can best meet the anticipated budget environment.
