THE STUDENTS OF INDEPENdence County clearly aren't the first to have computers in schools. They will, however, be part of one of the largest experiments in computer-aided learning in the country.

Beginning this fall, all of the students in grades K-12 in the county's seven school districts will be issued a $450 FreePad--a three-pound wireless touch-screen computer--in lieu of textbooks.

Toss in teachers, the Cave City schools on the Sharp-Independence County line and the Department of Corrections school at the Grimes Unit at Newport and you'll have more than 7,000 of the tablet-size computers in use. Independence County districts include Newark, Midland, ...
