Fifty years ago, tenor saxophonist Phil Urso began recording a classic album on the Savoy label called the Philosophy of Urso. It was a heady time for the Jersey City native who grew up in Denver. He had been working with the Elliot Lawrence Orchestra since 1948 and started his long association with trumpeter Chet Baker six years later.
In 1959, Urso returned to Denver and he's been here ever since. And despite his national prominence as a top-shelf, Lester Young-inspired West Coast tenor man, Urso has spent a good deal of time off the musical radar screen in recent years.
