The Australian Health Minister, Kay Patterson, has urged passage of Medicare reforms by the Senate. Patterson says the $A917m package will help to increase the availability of bulk-billed medical care, especially to disadvantaged and elderly Australians. Her claim came after figures were released that revealed a decline in the number of medical consultations that were bulk-billed. The Australian Labor Party countered that its proposed $A1.9m Medicare policy would do more to address the problem.
