The herb Ampalaya (bitter melon), classified as scientifically validated in 1992 by the Department of Health (DoH), is now being linked to some health problems among diabetics.
The Bureau of Food and Drugs (BFAD) warned that about 200 cases and four patients who stopped their anti-diabetic medications and shifted to ampalaya preparation experienced deterioration of glycaemic control of diabetes and diabetic ketoacidosis, respectively.
For those with previously stable chronic diabetes mellitus nephropathy, the BFAD said other signs and symptoms of health problems that often require emergency dialysis have been noted.
