One of the first things Peggy Martin did when her husband's company, Cumberland Transportation, suddenly closed a month ago was schedule doctor appointments.
Michael Martin, 44, drove trucks for the company for 171/2 years. But after September, his family will no longer have company-paid for health insurance, she said. Who knows when the Central Square family with two teenagers will have medical coverage again, Peggy Martin said.
The Martins are why many unions have made the preservation of employer-paid health insurance a top priority at bargaining tables. Teamsters Local 317 represented Cumberland's workers.
