A wide-ranging and interesting collection of essays, this book bridges the divide between the Revolutionary and Napoleonic periods. The collection is too complex as an introductory text, but offers much of value to those who possess an anchorage in the narrative. The theme of the search for stability is helpfully probed by Howard Brown. He highlights the continuity of contingency and considers the successive regimes of the period.
