The editor is to be congratulated on assembling some of the most interesting Heine scholars to produce this volume of essays. Though aimed primarily at advanced students, the book has much to offer fellow scholars. It falls into four main sections, plus an epilogue on Heine's posthumous reception. In the first section, focused on Heine as Romantic poet, Michael Perraudin writes sensitively on the Buch der Lieder as a record of experience: not that of the biographical subject Heine, however, but, more illuminatingly, of a generation caught between Romantic ...
