BP moves to the top in total assets.(Annual Reports)

Whether it's a one-year blip, or an indication of things to come remains to be seen, but when ranking the major oil companies by total assets for 2002, a new name appears at the top of the list: BP.

After years of ExxonMobil ruling the roost, BP surged ahead in 2002 with over $159 billion in total assets, up from $143 billion in 2001. In fact, ExxonMobil, with nearly $153 billion in total assets, found itself also threatened by Shell for the second spot. Shell saw the value of its total assets increase from $111 billion to over $152 billion.
