The dispute between Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat and Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas has reached a climax on the issues of who controls the Palestinian security apparatus and who has the authority to nominate or fire top officials in the Palestinian Authority.
The dispute between the two veterans of the Palestine Liberation Organization, which Arafat chairs and Abu Mazen assists, began when members of Arafat's Fatah movement's Central Committee accused the prime minister of conceding too much in negotiations with Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and his government.
