CARROLLTON -- With a snip of his dark blond hair, 9-year-old Josh Wicks took his first step to being a man.
Buddhist monks at the Wat Pasantidhamma (Satipatthana Peace Center) in Isle of Wight County made the cut, and a lock of the boy's hair floated into the cupped leaf of a waterlily.
From there, the fathers of five boys ages 8 to 12 took over to shave the heads of their sons until they glistened in the warm sun.
It was a bit scary for Josh's mother, Kate Godby, to watch her son participate in the first step of the summer novice training ceremony.
