LOS ANGELES _ Eric Gagne has cashed 55 consecutive save opportunities. He has 15.6 strikeouts per nine innings this season. He has prompted manager Jim Tracy to claim that he "has run out of words" in describing Gagne.
All are firsts.
One more save and Gagne is the bullpen DiMaggio. When asked if anyone would break the record, Gagne shrugged, but then he said something about "a new record tomorrow." Certainly nobody has made the ninth inning such a cursory thing.
