Most North American ports have plans to boost their intermodal potential in the years ahead. But the Port of New Orleans will market those plans actively-and railroads will play a big part.
If railroads are an integral part of intermodalism, then the Port of New Orleans has a leg up on many of its competitors. Six railroads serve the Crescent City: Southern Pacific, Union Pacific, Kansas City Southern, Illinois Central, Norfolk Southern, and CSX. In addition, the New Orleans Public Belt Railroad connects several port facilities with its six larger brothers.
