In this book author David Damrosch attempts to define, categorise and give examples of what he calls world literature.
The term world literature was first coined by the German poet Goethe to describe a literary perspective and a new cultural awareness. Since then it has been used by a great many literary minds who, it seems, each had differing ideas on just exactly what it meant. Damrosch goes to great lengths to present the reader with several different viewpoints on what exactly could be meant when the term world literature is used and also includes a number of examples of work that may fit into the definition.
