THE IMPORTANCE of Kirsti Simonsuuri (b. 1945) for the contemporary Finnish lyric is plain enough. It is too bad that she must come before the American public in this strange present condition, although one should be thankful for tainted blessings. The physical makeup of the virtual "book" Traveling Light tells a great deal. The poet's name is printed, on what may be called the cover, in smaller print than that of the translator, Jascha Kessler; photographs of Kessler and Simonsuuri are placed side by side on the putative back cover.
