Sep. 8--The recording industry on Monday made its most aggressive move yet to try to stamp out illegal song swapping on the Internet, suing 261 people for allegedly violating copyright laws and warning that thousands of similar suits may follow.
By filing the federal lawsuits nationwide as well as announcing an amnesty program, the Recording Industry Association of America hopes to scare online song swappers into ceasing the practice.
Individuals named, including 36 sued in U.S. District Court in Chicago, have on average shared more than 1,000 songs each on music-swapping web sites, ...
