Digital downloads have apparently earned their place in history. Music tracker Nielsen SoundScan has started reporting permanent downloads purchased from legitimate online music services. Initially the data will come from iTunes, Pressplay, Listen.com, MusicNet and Liquid Audio. When Roxio's new Napster service launches, it will replace the Pressplay data (Roxio bought Pressplay as the basis for the new Napster).
SoundScan will report the digital downloads under its "Non- Traditional" category that compiles Internet, mail order and concert venue sales. While overall CD sales fell 8.7% last year, sales by these non-traditional methods are going strong, rising from ...
