DUNCAN MACLAUGHLIN, the man who says he tracked down Lord Lucan, describes himself as an author, a screenwriter and an investigator. Can we now add "hoaxer" to that list? The question is a valid one because inquiries into MacLaughlin's background indicate that he has something of a reputation for failing to provide the facts to back up his claims.
And there is evidence that he could have disproved his own Lucan story if he had wanted to, but to do so would not have helped an attractive book deal.
