Oil is found on many different parts of the globe, in terrain as diverse as the creatures that inhabit it. Rain forests, with their rich tropical foliage, sheltering over half of the plant and animal species on Earth, are not exempted from the quest for oil.
As more environmental groups attack those who look to the rain forests for agricultural and industrial uses, oil companies are responding with their own policies to carry out exploration and production while still preserving the tropical forests.
These forests cover about 7 percent of the earth's land surface, mostly between the tropic of Cancer and the tropic of Capricorn.
