SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - The Cubs and Expos will play baseball at a place called Hi Bithorn Stadium this week. The park is named for Hiriam (Hi) Bithorn, the first Puerto Rican-born player to appear in the big leagues.
Bithorn, born in 1916, pitched for the Cubs and White Sox in four seasons, from 1942-47, with time away during World War II.
Bithorn compiled a 34-31 lifetime record with a 3.16 ERA. He died on New Year's Day 1952. According to reports, Bithorn was shot by police in Mexico while trying to sell his car.
