Sidestepping concerns that the action may result in "bureaucratizing" the independent Cruise Ship Consortium, the Board of Port Commissioners has voted to bring the eight-year-old group under the port's tight rein.

The vote to take over the cruise group came amid warnings that the consortium has done an effective job putting San Diego on the cruise industry map and shouldn't be subject to board "fidding," as dissenting Commissioner Dan Larsen put it.
