WASHINGTON-There's a mystery affecting room air conditioners this strange selling season. Manufacturers have shipped more than 8.4 million units this year, shattering the record of 6.5 million set in 2000. But where have all those extra machines gone?
Certainly they haven't been purchased by consumers in the Northeast, the nation's largest room-air market -- not this rainy year. Humidifier shipments also increased (by mid-August) 58 percent to an unprecedented 1.1 million units, but that's a much smaller category.
