The Argus, the oldest African-American newspaper in St. Louis, which once played a pivotal role in St. Louis politics, may be dead. At press time, the weekly had not published an issue since the July 24-30 issue and a sign on the Argus office door at 4595 Martin Luther King Drive read, "We're on vacation; printing will resume in three weeks."
Publisher Eugene Mitchell declined to be interviewed for this story, saying only that the reporter should call him back at a later date when he "might have a deal to announce."
