Death is making soul mates of Dale Earnhardt and Martin Luther King Jr. The racer and the civil-rights leader may not have had much in common in life, but efforts to build monuments to them after their deaths do.
In Kannapolis, a licensing spat between Dale Earnhardt Inc., whose president is his widow, and the driver's hometown has left a 9-foot statue of the NASCAR star, killed in a wreck two years ago, standing in an unfinished plaza. In Washington, a $100 million monument and statue were stalled when the King family demanded licensing fees.
