Durden has written the first scholarly biography of one of the seminal figures of North Carolina business, a man who rose from humble beginnings to create such powerful institutions as American Tobacco Co., British-American Tobacco Co., Duke Power Co. and The Duke Endowment, whose prime beneficiary was Duke University. The chapter that follows chronicles a lesser known venture that was perhaps Duke's riskiest. Durden, emeritus professor of history at Duke University, is the author of more than a dozen books, including three others about the Duke family.
