Seoul, July 18 (Yonhap) -- A North Korean civilian walked across the border early Friday and defected to South Korea, South Korea's military said.The 39-year-old man, identified only by his surname Park, surrendered himself to a military guard post after crossing the eastern edge of the heavily fortified border near Goseung at 3:49 a.m., said the Joint Chiefs of Staff in a news release.The office quoted the man as saying that he decided to defect to escape hunger in his communist homeland.
