ROBBINS, N.C. _ Former teachers, neighbors and childhood friends gathered at the old Milliken textile mill in Robbins, N.C., Tuesday to hear Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina formally kick off his campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination.
But Edwards' return to his hometown of 1,195 people was designed to reach a wider national audience _ and to energize a campaign that has yet to catch fire with Democratic voters.
