NEW YORK -- This year's spring allergy season was the first to feature nonprescription loratadine remedies. Now that the dust has settled, it is clear that the medications, led by Schering-Plough HealthCare Products Inc.'s Claritin, have had a significant impact on the category.
Claritin made its over-the-counter debut in December 2002 with five formulations, all at prescription strength: once-daily tablets, once-daily tablets that can be taken without water, a syrup for use by children age 2 and over, and 12- and 24-hour formulations of Claritin-D, which contains a decongestant.
