26 MAY 2003 TARAWA (Pacnews) - Kiribati's power needs gets a surging boost at the end of the week as the Japanese Government hands over new power supply facilities that it constructed at a cost of approximately US$11.5m.

The project included the construction of a new power station and installation of two new 1.4 MW-generating units at the Bikenibeu Power Station, the upgrading of 16 kilometres of 11 KV trunk distribution lines out of the total length of 54 kilometres and the installation of about 5 kilometres of new 11 KV distribution lines to areas that previously did not have access to electricity.
