The ready availability of raw materials lies at the foundation of the chemical cluster. Every chemical feedstock is present in the Rotterdam cluster, either as a product of one of the 4 refineries located in the area or brought in by pipeline or via deep sea terminal. The pipeline network within the cluster allows cheap and environmentally--friendly movement of raw materials.
Approximately 100 million tons of crude oil are shipped into Rotterdam annually, more than half of which is processed in one of the 4 refineries in the port. The rest is transported directly by pipeline to hinterland destinations in Belgium and Germany.
