THE NHS bill for methadone has trebled to nearly [pounds sterling] 7million in the past three years due to a massive increase in the number of addicts being given the drug.

Health authorities are dishing out thousands of doses of ' replacement drugs' despite fears they are failing to wean addicts off their habits.

Figures last week showed that a total of 382 Scots died from drug addiction last year, up a staggering 15 per cent in only 12 months.

One quarter of the deaths were methadone addicts - a worrying sign that the Scottish Executive's liberal ' harm reduction' drug policies are failing.
