This past fall a Scottish research team reported the results of a study they conducted on asthma education. They investigated the benefits that would be incurred by an education program for asthmatics that teaches self-management. The result of their study was reported in the October issue of "Thorax." (Thorax 2002;57:869-874) It supports what respiratory therapists working with asthmatic patients have surmised all along: For patients hospitalized with acute asthma a brief education program to teach self-management helped reduce morbidity and reduce subsequent readmissions.
