Sep. 21--HATTERAS, N.C.--Except for the intermittent buzzing of National Guard helicopters, there was an uncommon stillness Saturday in Hatteras Village, on North Carolina's newest island.
It is the stillness not of calm or comfort, but of devastation.
The smells of sewage and dead fish hang in air. The dunes are gone. And hearts, like the homes that housed them, are broken.
