EARLIER this year I bought a retired beach donkey called Blue for my girlfriend, Kate, 28, and her daughter Olivia, two. I thought it would be a simple pet to keep.

But shortly after she came to live in a field near where we live, Blue gave birth to a baby donkey we called Poppy. Sadly, the stress of the birth after years of working on Blackpool beach was just too much for Blue. We spent more than [pounds sterling]1,000 on vet's bills in a bid to save her, but she died.

So I have now found myself as the adoptive parent, working round the clock to look after Poppy.

I have bought a caravan and set up a paddock so I can bottle-feed her every three ...
