They call her "Grandma Mary" and she calls them "my little peanuts."
When they see her coming, the class of 4-year-olds chant, "Grandma Mary, Grandma Mary," all bright eyes and smiles.
She returns their smiles and with her warm, gentle voice, she begins entertaining them with stories and books. A special time with a special grandma.
She is Mary Planey of Gurnee, who is beginning her third year as a volunteer at the Warren Township Senior Center, reading each week to preschoolers enrolled in the Gurnee Park District program there.
