Sweden, 1962. Francis Crick and James Watson earn a Nobel Prize for discovering the form of DNA, the gene code allowing traits to pass from parents to their children.
When Crick and Watson started looking for the shape of DNA, they hoped it would show how hair color, height, and even disease resistance passed from generation to generation.
Earlier scientists helped. August Weismann found the shape of nucleic (noo-KLAY-ik) acids. Oswald Avery proved they carried genetic (gen-ET-ik) traits. Linus Pauling discovered that many were spiral shaped. Erwin Chargaff showed that no one building block outnumbered any other.
