A TEACHER was beginning a 12-month jail term last night over the death of a ten-year-old boy on an 'unbelievably foolhardy and negligent' school trip.
Max Palmer drowned after he was swept over the edge of a freezing, 8ft deep pool while swimming in a rainswollen stream during an adventure break with a party of older children.
Paul Ellis, 42, the geography teacher in charge of the party of pupils from Fleetwood High School, Lancashire, pleaded guilty to manslaughter.
It is the first time a teacher has admitted manslaughter of a pupil on a school trip and been jailed for the offence.
