WASHINGTON _ Republicans have been having fun at Gen. Wesley Clark's expense. Which is not surprising: Within moments of his announcement, Gen. Clark marched to the head of the Democratic column and, polls say, is now in a statistical dead heat with President Bush. Such numbers make Clark palatable to a wide variety of Democrats, from left-wing filmmaker Michael Moore to Bill Clinton's special trade representative, Mickey Kantor, and they obviously endanger George W. Bush's re-election.
