At a conference in Isfahan this week the soft talk was all of dialogue and co-operation-even with such ex-enemies as the United States and Saudi Arabia. The visitors were American and British oil-company officials and Arab oil ministers, including the first Saudi oil minister to come to iran since 1979. They were assured in a message from President Ali Akbar Rafsanjani that iran wanted closer economic relations with the West and better ties with its Arab neighbours. in the new world order, said the foreign minister, Ali Akbar Velayati, "economic considerations should overshadow political priorities".
