My first year in college my parents sent me a card that read, "Happy Birthday to the Most Responsible Person in Our Family." It felt good to be appreciated.
Until I opened the card to find a picture of a messy room illustrated with little signs. "Responsible for this," said the sign next to the spilled milk. "Responsible for that," read the sign next to the broken bicycle.
Ha, ha, ha. It might have been mildly amusing that my parents thought I had a future as the Mother of all Messes. But, strangely, I also got the same card from three other members of my family. On different birthdays.
