Sep. 30--Come Wednesday, instead of paying $300 to register that snazzy sport utility vehicle, consumers will shell out just less than $1,000 as higher vehicle licensing fees kick in.
The impending tripling of fees, which are to generate about $4 billion for state coffers, are drumming up some brisk business for local dealerships, as buyers try to make purchases before the deadline.
"We practically doubled sales this weekend," said Tom Allen, sales manager at Commonwealth Volkswagen in the Santa Ana Auto Mall. He expects business to be brisk todayas ...
