In the early 1980s, brokerage firm E.F. Hutton ran a television commercial that boldly declared, "When E.F. Hutton talks, people listen."
At the time, E.F. Hutton had enough credibility in the minds of investors to make such a confident statement. Ironically, by the end of the 1980s, E.F. Hutton no longer existed. Revelations of poor leadership and fraud destroyed the company's credibility--and, with it, the company itself.
