THE Atkins Diet is being blamed for a slump in the sales of fish and chips.

Fryers fear there may be a direct link between a dip in business and a surge in popularity for the low- carbohydrate high-protein dietary regime.

Millions of people are taking up the controversial eating plan, despite warnings that it may be dangerous.

Devotees are instructed to avoid eating carbohydrates and consume large amounts of protein, such as eggs, cheese and meat.

That is bad news for producers of potatoes, rice and pasta, which are firmly off the Atkins menu.
