A flurry of mergers and acquisitions in the food industry was disclosed prior to the start of the Labor Day weekend. Chiquita Brands International, Inc. sold its interest in a Florida citrus joint venture, The Packers of Indian River, Ltd., to its joint venture partner. Fort Pierce, FL-based Packers of Indian River is a produce group that grows and packs grape-fruit and other citrus products whose assets include two packing houses and about 6,000 acres of groves. A Chiquita spokesman said that the move is part of the Cincinnati, OH-based company's year-old plan to focus on core operations. He described the business as a "pretty small operation."
