SAN DIEGO - The Dodgers' days of optimism ended Thursday night, along with the hope that somehow, some way, the playoff race miraculously would turn in their favor.
The setup came a couple of thousand miles away, when Florida beat Philadelphia, and then the San Diego Padres delivered the knockout blow. Their young but inconsistent starter, Brian Lawrence, dominated the Dodgers and knocked them out of playoff contention with a 6-1 loss in front of 17,988 at Qualcomm Stadium.
