When the actor Gregory Peck died earlier this year, his lengthy list of memorable roles was reduced, by most media accounts, to one: Atticus Finch.
It is assumed, I suppose, that everyone recalls Peck's portrayal of the good, decent Depression-era Southern lawyer from Harper Lee's 1960 novel "To Kill a Mockingbird."
Except that I'm not sure everyone does. I didn't.
That is to say, I read the book years ago. I think every kid (except, perhaps, those in rural Alabama, where the book is set) ends up reading "To Kill a Mockingbird" before he or she gets out of high school.
