For ProMedica Health System, low-tech is better than no tech. The Toledo, Ohio-based delivery system earlier this year began mailing bar-coded identification cards to patients several days before a scheduled visit, asking them to present the cards when they signed in.
The reinforced paper cards aren't high-tech, but the bar codes enable clerks to quickly access patients' most recent demographic and insurance information. The cards are supported by a new enterprisewide, Web-based registration system developed internally by ProMedica.
