The blaze that destroyed a Lyncourt duplex Tuesday was sparked by a gasoline container that exploded after it accidentally fell into the basement and landed against a water heater, firefighters said.
The fire, at 113-115 Gaynor Ave., began about 10:20 a.m. when owner and resident Richard Napolitano was moving a mattress from the basement to the first floor and accidentally knocked the gasoline container down the basement stairs, Lyncourt Second Assistant Fire Chief Tim Hall said.
"That fell down the stairs, bounced around, fell through a hole under the stairs and landed next to the hot water heater," Hall said. ...
