Early this year, the National Childhood Cancer Foundation issued a national request for panelists to participate in its major lobbying effort on Capitol Hill. In particular, it sought siblings of cancer patients to give voice to their experiences as family members.
Karen McKinley, a clinical social worker with the Childhood Cancer Program at Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters, submitted the names of two sets of local siblings she believed could speak to the subject: sisters Alyssa and Lacey Berns of Virginia Beach and brothers Ed and Chris Bennett of Chesapeake.
